Another Version of Grandmother Rose’s Peas

Peas Linguica and Eggs, a Portuguese Breakfast or Dinner

Peas Linguica Eggs

Loved my Grandmother’s peas. Always served as a side dish. I don’t remember anyone else eating them … Maybe because I kept the bowl close and ignored the nonverbal cues, frequently used at our table, to pass the dish. My bad!

I’ve taken her recipe a bit further and added a few different ingredients. I think you’ll like this Portuguese Breakfast Style that can second as a dinner meal. I probably don’t need to tell you but this is not a light dish. Sometimes you just gotta have linguica!

Hamburger Hash

Hamburger HashRight out of the 40’s! But I’ve heard Hash is making a comeback! Warning: This only has three ingredients not including salt and pepper the cooking makes all the difference in taste. Caramelization is the secret! A well-seasoned cast iron skillet or other heavy bottomed skillet will do … And the trick is to not turn or stir the ingredients frequently. Otherwise, the dish will be far from flavorful and you might find yourself adding bell pepper, salsa, avocado and any other ingredient you can think of to make up for the loss in taste.

So, you might be asking why try this! It’s tasty, quick, economical and well liked. Great for a quick dinner or a large breakfast spread.

Scones In Any Flavor

Scones

This is a basic scone recipe with multiple flavor possibilities. It’s just ever so slightly sweet that adding meat or cheese isn’t out of place. Use it for your leftover turkey and cranberry sauce for a savory lunch or snack. Or simply add Meyer lemon zest and chopped cranberries for a more acceptable tea accompaniment. This scone recipe doesn’t remind one of sweet rolls or a sweet breakfast treat. It definitely has a biscuit taste and texture. Simple and few ingredients.

Lots of Family and Food over the last days. It’s been great fun! Thinking of what to do with my few turkey left overs. Decided to try out my new scone baking dish. And going to try adding a little of this and that to my recipe, making a variety. Maybe cranberries, turkey, cheese, Meyer lemon. The lemon tree is full this year. Can’t wait!

Since we look at scones as a breakfast food most often here are a few of past Kitchen Getaway Breakfast Recipes. And I’ve added the two Dinner Recipes below specific for cooked turkey. In the meantime, I’ll be in the kitchen coming up with some great scones to share with you later.

Bacon Pecan Maple Buttermilk Waffles

Breakfast is a favorite meal for my family. With four children and their spouses you might imagine food choices are many. We might agree on waffles … but what kind? This recipe can be changed up as you go. And with my new waffle iron that reminds me the waffles are done … and no more stuck on results it’s become a cinch.

I’ve used shortcuts here and there. So, this can be done with the distraction of a crowd and still present with excellent results.

Give it try! You won’t be disappointed.

Gingerbread Muffins & Rum Sauce

Excellent With No Frills Too!

Gingerbread Muffins

For a short time I lived in a Los Angeles apartment community. Every evening at dinner time I’d take little Stella for a walk. We both needed the exercise after being cooped up all day. Our favorite walk was the fifth level courtyard where floors of apartments faced with open windows. Then the real pleasure … the scent of spices, spices from all over the world, wafting through the air all at the same time.

Even with the pungent aroma of many dishes I make I can’t imagine having a kitchen separate from the rest of my house. These scents just play a pleasurable part in my life. Yes, more often than not my kitchen smells of garlic.

As seasons change so does my menu. Today I’ve made gingerbread muffins and I just love the way my house smells. I’ve added a rum sauce and a little ice cream to make it a dessert … But it could manage all alone.

Enjoy this recipe that mixes up in minutes by hand … And fill your house with the most amazing smells of Fall.
